This bread machine recipe combines honey and molasses for a rich flavor, perfect for sandwiches or toast. The addition of cocoa powder and coffee enhances the color and taste, making it a delightful choice for any bread lover.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Lukewarm water, approximately 80°F–90°F (27°C–32°C)
  • 3 tablespoons Honey
  • 3 tablespoons Dark molasses
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter, softened or melted
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cups Bread flour
  • 1 cup Whole wheat flour
  • 1.5 tablespoons Unsweetened cocoa powder, (Dutch-process yields the darkest color)
  • 1 teaspoon Instant coffee or espresso granules
  • 1.5 teaspoons Bread machine yeast (or instant yeast)

Directions

  1. Add the liquids: Pour the warm water, honey, molasses, and melted butter into the bread machine pan fitted with the kneading paddle.

  2. Add the dry ingredients: Add the bread flour, whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, instant coffee, and salt on top of the liquids.

  3. Add the yeast: Create a shallow well in the center of the dry ingredients (taking care that it does not touch the liquid or salt below) and place the yeast into the well.

  4. Select settings: Set the machine to the Whole Wheat cycle (or Basic / White Bread cycle), select a 1.5 lb loaf, and choose a Medium crust. Press Start.

  5. Check the dough: About 5 to 10 minutes into the kneading cycle, open the lid to inspect the dough ball. It should be smooth, soft, and slightly tacky. If it looks too wet or sticks to the sides, add 1 tablespoon of bread flour.

  6. Cool: When the cycle completes, carefully remove the pan using oven mitts. Let the bread rest in the pan for 5 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
