The Paloma cocktail, a refreshing and popular Mexican drink, has a history rooted in the vibrant culture of the country. Believed to have originated in the mid-20th century, the Paloma has become a classic tequila-based beverage.
Legend has it that a tequila company, seeking to promote its product, collaborated with a Mexican mixologist to create a cocktail that would resonate with locals. The result was the Paloma, a simple yet delightful blend of tequila, grapefruit soda, and a splash of lime. This concoction quickly gained popularity for its zesty, effervescent profile.
Over the years, the Paloma has evolved, with variations incorporating ingredients like agave syrup or grapefruit juice. Despite its numerous adaptations, the Paloma remains a cherished symbol of Mexican mixology, celebrated for its ability to capture the essence of a sunny day south of the border. Today, it stands as a testament to the rich array of flavors that define Mexican cocktail culture.
Ingredients
- 2 oz silver tequila
- 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
-
Pinch of salt
- 1/2 oz simple syrup (or to taste)
- Club soda to top
-
4-5 drops Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pepper tincture
- Lime wedge to garnish
Directions
Tincture
Mix 2 oz Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pepper with 4 oz clear, clean-tasting alcohol (vodka or Everclear). Let sit for two days, shaking the mixture occasionally. Strain into a clean container. If you notice a dark green cast to the tincture, particularly when you first pour it into a cocktail, that is fine. The volatile oils in the pepper often express as dark green to black.
Make the Cocktail
Fill a rocks glass with ice. If you want a drink that you can sip on all day, fill a highball glass with ice instead - the extra volume will proof down the drink.
Add tequila, grapefruit juice, salt, and syrup.
Stir
Top with club soda and stir gently.
Add Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pepper tincture, garnish with lime.
