A timeless American treat with fizz, foam, and nostalgia.
This simple yet satisfying root beer float combines two of the most beloved classic flavors: smooth vanilla ice cream and bold, bubbly root beer. Crowned with a swirl of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, it’s a treat that delivers creamy sweetness and fizzy refreshment in every sip and spoonful.
The root beer float—also known as a “black cow”—is said to have been invented in 1893 by Frank Wisner, the owner of a Colorado mining company. Inspired by the snow-capped peaks of the Cow Mountain, he dropped a scoop of vanilla ice cream into his favorite root beer, and the iconic dessert-drink was born. It quickly became a soda fountain staple across America, especially during the golden age of diners and drugstore counters.
Whether you’re making it for a summer gathering, a retro-themed night, or simply indulging in a sweet moment of nostalgia, this root beer float delivers classic Americana in a frosty glass.
Ingredients
-
2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
-
1 bottle or can (12 oz) of root beer, chilled
-
Whipped cream
-
1 maraschino cherry (with stem, for garnish)
Directions
Chill your glass: Place a tall glass or float glass in the freezer for about 10–15 minutes for best results.
Add ice cream: Remove the glass from the freezer and add 2 generous scoops of vanilla ice cream.
Pour root beer: Slowly pour the chilled root beer over the ice cream. Pour at an angle to minimize foam overflow. Leave about an inch of space at the top.
Top it off: Add a swirl of whipped cream on top.
Garnish: Place a maraschino cherry right on top of the whipped cream.
Serve immediately with a straw and long spoon. Enjoy!
