Ingredients
-
4-6 frozen hash brown patties
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter, plus more if needed (for skillet method)
- 1 cup prepared chili, heated (canned or homemade, no beans preferred for texture, but use what you like!)
- 1 cup shredded mild cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup sour cream
-
2 tablespoons bacon bits
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh scallions (green onions)
-
2-4 slices fresh jalapeño (to taste)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Directions
Prepare the Hash Brown Patties (Air fryer method. See Recipe Extras section for toaster oven, stovetop and conventional oven method)
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray (optional).
- Place the frozen hash brown patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd; cook in batches if necessary.
Air fry for 12-18 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer model and the patty thickness.
Heat the Chili
While the hash brown patties are cooking, gently heat the chili in a small saucepan over low heat until warmed through, or microwave according to package directions.
Assemble and Melt Cheese in Air Fryer
- Once the hash brown patties are crispy, carefully remove them and arrange them back in the air fryer basket (or on an air-fryer safe dish if you have one that fits) in a single layer.
- Sprinkle about half of the shredded cheddar cheese over the hot patties.
- Spoon the hot chili over the cheesy hash brown patties.
- Top with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese.
- Return the patties to the air fryer. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 2-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch carefully to prevent burning the cheese.
Garnish and Serve
- Carefully remove the loaded hash brown patties from the air fryer.
- Dollop generous spoonfuls of sour cream over the top of each patty.
- Sprinkle with bacon bits and chopped scallions.
Garnish with more cheddar cheese(optional) and fresh or jalapeño slices.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Recipe Note
For perfectly crispy hash brown patties, you have several convenient cooking methods to choose from, each offering a slightly different approach. 3. Conventional Oven

Tips and Variations:
Chili Choice: For a quick option, use canned chili. For richer flavor, homemade chili recipe. Adjust the spice level of the chili to your preference.
Cheese: While mild cheddar is classic, feel free to experiment with other cheeses like Monterey Jack, Colby, or a Mexican blend.
Extra Toppings: Consider adding a sprinkle of fresh cilantro, or a dash of hot sauce for extra flavor.
Spice It Up: For more heat, use spicy chili or add extra jalapeño slices, or even a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
Make it a Meal: Serve alongside a fried egg for a complete breakfast, or as a hearty side dish.
